Once,
in younger days,
you were
quick
or lucky
but most of all
you believed
that people were basically good.
But now,
in later days,
you are
slow
and alone
but most of all
you know the waking and the heart-pound
at every sound
in the cold-starred night.
_______
for this and for Day 6 of the April thang.
I hope this is about the Velveteen Rabbit.
ReplyDeleteohh crushing last 3 lines -
ReplyDeletethis has teeth - I rather like it, because literally, as the second stanza begins, I could feel my heart beating just a titch faster which just contrasts so well with "slow and alone" ... this has bones, - I'm going to go pick my teeth.
Excellent write. Once upon a time...the rabbits feel safe in our yard. Poor things. The last three lines tug at my heart.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. This is exactly it.
ReplyDeleteOh, 'cold-starred' really got to me ... as did the whole poem.
ReplyDeleteYour metaphor is excellent, Shay - the March hare of youth and the older hare, if I may quote Shakespeare: 'the old hare hoar' (the pun not intended!) Those last three lines interpret the picture so well.
ReplyDeleteUnderstood.
ReplyDeleteThe innocence of childhood and the fears (and realizations) that accompany getting older "and wiser". Sigh.
